Mizoram is preparing for the 2027 census by planning to enumerate refugees separately, officials and reports say. The move will cover people displaced by conflict and migration from neighbouring countries as well as internally displaced persons (IDPs) within India.

Both outlets focus on Mizoram’s displaced populations, noting the state’s large refugee community. The Hindu reports that Mizoram has more than 38,000 refugees from Bangladesh, Myanmar and Manipur, while local organisations estimate the number is higher—above 60,000. Times of India similarly says the census will record Myanmar and Bangladesh refugees and Manipur IDPs, reflecting a categorisation approach rather than counting all displaced residents under a single group.

The differing figures cited by The Hindu point to gaps between government-linked counts and estimates raised by community groups. Overall, the reports agree on the central point: Mizoram’s 2027 census methodology will treat refugees and IDPs as distinct groups, with the intent of improving how displaced populations are counted.
