Hong Kong police are investigating the disappearance of the urn containing late Cantopop singer Anita Mui Yim-fong’s ashes after the singer’s family disclosed it was missing from Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. Multiple outlets report the family says police have made “no progress” over a three-month period, and that the incident causes “immense distress.”

Police say they received a report on July 18 alleging that an item stored at a Lantau monastery was suspected to have gone missing. The case is being handled by the Lantau district crime squad and has been classified as a “request for police assistance,” with no arrests reported so far. One report notes the investigation is being stepped up, with additional resources and an upgraded unit assigned to the case.

The family publicly appeals for information about the ashes’ whereabouts, sharing details through statements issued around Mui’s birthday and reposted by fan groups. The singer died in 2003 at age 40.
