India’s nuclear power expansion plans could rely on substantial private investment, according to Atomic Energy Commission chairman Ajit Kumar Mohanty. He says India currently has about 9 GW of installed nuclear capacity and expects large-scale growth by 2047.

Mohanty estimates that private firms could invest around ₹7.5 lakh crore (₹7.5 trillion) and contribute roughly 30 GW of additional nuclear capacity by 2047. One outlet also frames the broader ambition as a target of reaching much higher overall nuclear capacity by 2047, with private investment positioned as a key enabler of that trajectory.

While outlets share the same core figures—current capacity near 9 GW, the projected ₹7.5 lakh crore private investment, and a 30 GW contribution by 2047—they differ in emphasis. One focuses mainly on the sector investment and private role, while another ties these numbers to a wider nuclear capacity goal and intermediate milestones through 2032.
