Airstrikes hit a remote gold mine in northern Sudan near the Egypt–Sudan border, killing dozens of artisanal miners, according to rights monitors and survivors’ accounts. Reports describe the mine as far from the main front lines of Sudan’s civil war, with videos circulated showing what appeared to be Egyptian munitions.
Emergency Lawyers, a Sudanese rights group, says at least 72 miners died in the Saturday attack, calling it the second incident of its kind in several months. Reuters and other outlets report that Egypt is blamed for the strike, though Egypt has not issued an official comment specifically confirming responsibility. Egypt has previously said it conducts “large-scale” operations against illegal gold mining within its borders. Other accounts, including those from miners, place the death toll above 200, which no government has confirmed. France 24 and other outlets note that AFP and other investigators cannot independently verify the claims, and no official figures are available from Sudan or Egypt.
