Daniel Graham, 41, one of two men convicted of cutting down the Sycamore Gap tree near Hadrian’s Wall, is released from prison on licence. He was sentenced in July last year to four years and three months for criminal damage linked to the tree’s felling in September 2023.

Reporting across outlets says Graham has served about 16 months plus time on remand before being freed on licence, with the court ordering that 40% of the sentence be served in custody and the rest in the community. His co-defendant, Adam Carruthers, was released earlier this year, in April. The cases stem from the tree being chopped down during the night, with the sycamore also causing damage to Hadrian’s Wall when it fell.

Outlets also describe how the men travelled to the site from Cumbria and how Graham filmed Carruthers during the offence. A Ministry of Justice spokesman quoted by one outlet says release on licence comes with strict conditions and breaches can result in immediate return to custody.
