Former professional footballer Doug Loft, who captained both Port Vale and Gillingham, dies at the age of 39 following a medical emergency. Multiple outlets report that his death is sudden, and that the news is confirmed through statements shared by Gillingham FC.

Across the reports, Loft’s playing career is described as spanning about 18 years and including more than 420 appearances. He is remembered as a leader and key contributor at clubs including Brighton & Hove Albion, Port Vale, Gillingham, Colchester United and Shrewsbury Town, with additional time in non-league football. Port Vale and Gillingham both acknowledge his impact on and off the pitch. Following his death, clubs publish tributes on social media.

One outlet also adds that Port Vale sought permission from the English Football League, with the family’s blessing, for players to wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence before an upcoming match. Loft is survived by his wife Laura and their two daughters, Freya and Amelie.
