A super PAC aligned with Sen. Susan Collins is reported to have placed online attack ads for the Maine Senate race in the wrong “Portland,” running them in Portland, Oregon rather than Portland, Maine. Multiple outlets report that the Defending Main Street super PAC spent about $20,000 to $25,000 on a 30-second digital ad attacking Democratic candidate Troy Jackson ahead of the November election.

The ad, titled “Too Many Taxes,” focuses on taxes and the cost-of-living, issues both Collins and Jackson emphasize. Viewers in Oregon posted that they were seeing large numbers of Collins-related ads; screenshots attributed to Google’s Ads Transparency Center showed the selected ad regions matched Oregon zip codes. The ad placement was later updated, with Maine zip codes shown instead.

Outlets differ on wording and figures, but they converge on the core account: the ads were mistakenly targeted to Portland, Oregon. A spokesperson for Jackson’s campaign criticized Collins’s allies as being out of touch with Maine. Other officials cited a media vendor or ad buyer mistake, with some noting the placement was taken down or corrected, and that any refund process was underway.
