The BBC shelves plans to build a new studio and radio drama theatre for long-running series The Archers, and the programme is set to stop recording in Birmingham for the first time in its 75-year history. Multiple outlets report that recording arrangements that would have kept the show based in Birmingham are being reversed.
The decision is linked to the BBC’s wider cost-cutting measures, described as part of a broader budget reduction programme. The Guardian and BBC News say the BBC had been planning a new home for the show as part of a move to its Birmingham hub in Digbeth, referred to as a “tea factory” site. Evening Standard adds that, if recording changes proceed, it would be the first time the drama is recorded outside Birmingham.
While outlets differ in how they describe the specific facility plans, they broadly agree the studio and theatre proposals are being scrapped and that the change reflects the BBC’s financial restructuring.
