South Korea’s stock exchange operator, KRX, activates a sell-side sidecar for the KOSPI after the index falls sharply in early trading. According to KRX, program trading for KOSPI-listed shares is suspended for five minutes at 9:48 a.m. The KOSPI opens down 3.1% and by around 9:50 a.m. it is down 257.09 points, or 4.03%, to 6,127.15.
Outlets link the decline to broader pressure from overseas markets, with investors trimming risk ahead of major earnings announcements and the release of U.S. inflation data. Selling is reported particularly in semiconductor-related shares, including Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, as losses in U.S. technology stocks weigh on sentiment. The sell-side sidecar mechanism is triggered when the KOSPI 200 Futures Index drops at least 5% for at least one minute, as described by the exchange.
While the reports differ mainly in how urgently they frame the decision, they agree on the timing, the trigger condition, and the immediate trading suspension tied to the KOSPI’s decline.
