Indonesian authorities release 20 protected green sea turtles into the ocean off Bali after seizing them from a suspected smuggling operation. The turtles were found alive on an abandoned boat near Serangan Island, also known as Turtle Island, following a police raid. Officers carried out final health checks at a conservation center before transporting the turtles to the shoreline for release.

Marine police intercepted the attempt after residents reported suspicious activity in the waters near Serangan. All 22 turtles found on the boat are green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), and the suspected smugglers fled before officers reached the vessel. Two of the turtles are sick and remain in care, with their release expected once treatment is completed.

Outlets also note that the species is protected under Indonesian conservation and fisheries laws, and that authorities continue efforts to disrupt wildlife trafficking in Bali, a region that has previously been linked to illegal sea turtle trade. The releases are presented as part of ongoing enforcement actions targeting capture and trafficking of protected sea turtles.
