GitHub is tightening its npm “trusted publishing” setup by adding a 48-hour expiration window for configurations that have not yet been validated. The change follows a security investigation that found an attacker could publish new package updates without stealing maintainer credentials by exploiting how repository ownership is verified.

Bloom Security reported the issue to GitHub in early June 2026. According to the researchers, the flaw involves identification based on repository address/name information rather than a permanent identifier, allowing an attacker to register a repository slug that a maintainer had left behind. Bloom estimates that more than 1,500 npm packages were exposed, with a combined download count exceeding 10 million.

Across coverage, outlets describe the same core fix: a trusted publishing configuration becomes effectively permanent only after a first successful publish, while unvalidated configurations expire after 48 hours. Help Net Security and others also note GitHub’s broader remediation and the expectation that package maintainers review trusted connection settings and recreate them if repository identities change.
