The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) announces a complete citywide water supply shutdown every Thursday starting October 15. The measure is intended to cut consumption by at least 10% and help ensure that water stocks last until August 31, 2027. Officials cite concerns over deficient rainfall and the potential for ongoing El Niño effects to extend water stress beyond the current monsoon season.
The decision follows a Maharashtra government directive to local bodies to reduce water use from October 16. The move is linked to lower storage in the dam/reservoir chain supplying Pune, particularly the Khadakwasla system. As of October 12, reported combined storage in the Khadakwasla chain is 26.22 TMC, lower than at the same point in previous years.
Coverage also distinguishes Pune from the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad area. Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is considering an additional 10% reduction from October 16, but outlets report its detailed implementation plan—such as whether supply days or hours will change—has not been finalised. Residents in both areas are told to follow revised conservation instructions, including restrictions on non-essential water use.
