Federal regulators’ market oversight staff flagged unusually well-timed oil futures trading ahead of a March 23 decision by President Donald Trump to postpone planned U.S. strikes on Iranian energy facilities, according to reports citing sources.
The traders reportedly executed large contracts in the futures market in a narrow window shortly before a Truth Social post where Trump delayed the strikes. Bloomberg and other outlets say the staff identified the trading activity and referred their findings to the CFTC’s enforcement division for potential insider-trading review. However, according to the sources cited by Bloomberg, a senior CFTC official instructed the staff to retract the referral.
The reports also describe the intervention as rare within the agency’s usual process, where oversight analysis is typically handled by staff and enforcement makes the legal determination. Bloomberg says the CFTC did not comment, and the senior official named in the report did not respond to requests. The episode is discussed in the context of ongoing scrutiny of insider trading concerns in markets tied to major political developments.
