IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode, 22, is found dead in his Powai campus hostel room on September 18. Multiple outlets report that before his death he allegedly faced an examination-related incident, including accusations of using a mobile phone during a test and concerns about his performance in a thermodynamics paper.
According to police accounts cited by outlets, Wakode reportedly wrote an apology admitting to cheating and asked the institute for a second chance. Sources also say he expressed anxiety to a friend after the examination about how he would fare. IIT Bombay previously said he received counselling and that no disciplinary action had been taken at the time.
The case is being investigated by Mumbai’s Crime Branch. An IIT Bombay professor, Suryanarayana Doolla, has been booked for allegedly abetting suicide, with investigators recording statements from dozens of people, including students, staff, and Wakode’s family. Wakode’s parents allege caste-based discrimination and mental pressure, while Doolla denies wrongdoing and says he followed institute procedures. Following the controversy, Doolla was removed from an administrative role as dean.
