The Indian Coast Guard apprehends a Maharashtra-based fishing boat suspected of diesel smuggling off the Mumbai coast. The vessel was intercepted during surveillance near Prongs Lighthouse, after it allegedly failed to respond to communications and attempted to evade following a challenge by Coast Guard ships. Seven crew members are taken into custody.
According to the Coast Guard, the master of the vessel confesses that the boat received about 4,000 litres of illicit diesel at sea. During the chase and search, the crew reportedly discharged around 500 litres of the contraband overboard, which authorities describe as an effort to destroy evidence. The Coast Guard confiscates operational documents and six mobile phones and escorts the boat to Mumbai Harbour.
Outlet reports align on the main elements: the interception off Mumbai, the suspected diesel smuggling, the number of crew detained, and the alleged disposal of part of the contraband. Authorities say a joint investigation involving the Coast Guard, Indian Navy, state intelligence agencies and state police is underway, and local police proceed with registering a first information report (FIR).
