A civil servant, Kashim Chowdhury, is on trial at Southwark Crown Court accused of fraudulently holding multiple overlapping full-time government roles and being paid for them, prosecutors say. The court hears that his contracted hours at one point amounted to roughly seven and a half days’ worth of work per week across several positions.

Prosecutors allege that between February 2020 and September 2023 he secured work with a range of employers, with outlets reporting figures that total nearly £350,000 from eight employers. The prosecution says he made false representations about his employment status when applying for roles, including that he needed to work from home to care for an “unwell” mother. As workloads allegedly became unmanageable, prosecutors say he used sick leave selectively while continuing other jobs.

All sources describe allegations that the deception was exposed following an alert from the UK National Fraud Initiative to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). One account says a video call about sick leave became notable when he allegedly appeared to apply make-up to appear unwell. Chowdhury denies nine counts of fraud, and the trial continues.
