Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court hears that Stretford Grammar School headteacher Michael Mullins was killed after being struck by a car while cycling home, then being dragged under the vehicle for more than a mile. Prosecutors say the defendant, Simon Richardson, drove through give-way markers at a junction in Altrincham and hit Mr Mullins, and did not stop to help after the collision.

The opening case described eyewitnesses stopping to call emergency services while searching but failing to find Mr Mullins because, the prosecution says, he was trapped beneath the wheels. The court hears Richardson drove away at speed at times, with evidence including alleged vehicle damage captured by ANPR after the crash. Prosecutors argue Richardson knew Mr Mullins was trapped and injured yet alive, and that his actions caused or accelerated his death.

Richardson denies murder and is also facing alternative charges of manslaughter and dangerous driving. The trial follows Mr Mullins, 56, being pronounced dead at the roadside about 40 minutes after the incident on April 20.
