Federal prosecutors, the FBI and OpenAI say a Saudi national engineer has been arrested and charged after a listening or recording device was found in an OpenAI conference room. The device was reportedly concealed behind a television in an executive meeting area, with outlets describing it as wrapped in material such as toilet paper.

According to the reports, prosecutors say the device was designed to intercept oral communications, and that it was encrypted and built to evade detection. OpenAI says it did not detect or confirm that it had been able to access proprietary information, stating that no model weights, source code or customer data were taken. One outlet reports OpenAI’s internal systems helped identify and trace the suspect.

The accounts vary mainly in their emphasis on the device’s specific concealment method and technical description, but they broadly agree on the individual’s identity and role as an OpenAI engineer, the location and discovery of the device behind the TV, and that authorities have filed charges related to attempting to record conversations inside the office. The matter is now before the courts.
