ElevationLab has pulled its “AirTag Silencer” accessory after significant criticism that it could be used to help stalkers disable Apple’s anti-stalking audio alerts. Multiple outlets report that the product was designed to pierce or disable the AirTag’s speaker, removing the sound the device emits when it is separated from its owner.
The company previously said the accessory targeted legitimate concerns, such as making it harder for thieves to detect AirTags on valuable items like bikes. Outlets also note that AirTags have long faced scrutiny over stalking misuse, and Apple has implemented safety changes over time, including adjustments intended to make tampering with the device harder. After complaints, ElevationLab apologized and acknowledged that the tool could assist people with “bad intentions.”
According to reports, ElevationLab stops selling the Silencer and communicates the change to customers. The company says it will remove the product from availability and intends to use its patent to help prevent similar accessories from being made by others.
