A prosecution witness in the trial of former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai alleges that el-Rufai and some associates planned to frustrate an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation by earmarking $600,000 for payments. The allegation is presented as part of the prosecution’s evidence at the Kaduna State High Court, where the witness testifies that the funds were intended to influence EFCC officials and intermediaries.
Reporting across outlets describes the witness—an SSS forensic investigator—as saying the amount was split into $500,000 and $100,000. The witness also alleges that audio recordings captured discussions about preventing EFCC scrutiny of matters involving a company identified as “Singularity,” including references to possible actions involving liquidation processes and steps to impede investigation efforts. The conversations, the witness says, include mentions of legal and other intermediaries.
The court has not yet established the truth of the claims. The defence objected during the proceedings over how the investigator’s document was served, and the judge ruled that the defence could obtain a certified true copy for examination. The matter is adjourned for further cross-examination.
