Central Railway is seeking approval to divert about 6.5 hectares of forest land in Thane and Shahapur for a planned fourth railway line between Kalyan and Asangaon, part of efforts to increase capacity on a busy suburban and freight corridor. The proposal is submitted for clearance via the Centre’s Parivesh portal, following requirements under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, for diversion of forest land for non-forestry use.

Outlets report that the project is expected to cost Rs 1,619.96 crore and is being carried out jointly by Central Railway and the Maharashtra government, with costs described as shared between the two. The fourth line is designed to run largely parallel to existing and planned tracks, using the railways’ right of way where possible to reduce additional land needs. The alignment is reported to pass through areas including Kalyan, Shahad, Ambivli, Titwala, Khadavali, Vasind and Asangaon, with connections to railway yards at multiple locations.

The different reports broadly converge on the same figures, route geography, and the role of Central clearance as a key step before construction can proceed, while emphasizing the goal of easing congestion on the Kalyan–Asangaon section shared by multiple types of trains.
