Iranian drama “Midday Meal,” directed by Majid Majidi, wins the top Best Film honor at the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). Announced during the festival’s closing ceremony, the award also gives the film automatic qualification for submission for the Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film category.

At the same ceremony, Taiwan’s Lee Yun Chan is named Best Director. Acting awards go to Zhou Xun and Kashun Himeno. Jury President Zhang Yimou says the seven-member jury unanimously selects “Midday Meal” as the festival’s top choice. Majidi dedicates the win to people in Iran, while noting personal meaning connected to his family. BIFF, hosted solely by actor Yim Si-wan, runs for 10 days, concluding with the awards presentation at the Busan Cinema Center.

Across outlets, the consistent focus is the festival’s top prize for “Midday Meal” and the Oscars qualification that comes with it, alongside the key directing and acting winners announced at BIFF’s close.
