The International Monetary Fund (IMF) endorses the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) decision to cut its benchmark interest rate. The IMF says the adjustment reflects progress in reducing inflation and notes that the CBN’s monetary policy response remains appropriate.

At the same time, the IMF cautions against easing too quickly. While acknowledging improvements on inflation, it warns that monetary conditions are still tight. This implies policymakers should consider the pace of disinflation and maintain discipline to avoid reversing gains.

Both outlets frame the IMF’s stance as a conditional approval: the rate cut is supported because inflation has improved, but future policy moves should be guided by continued price stability. The emphasis differs slightly, with one outlet highlighting the “premature easing” warning and the other stressing that, despite the rate cut, monetary conditions remain restrictive.
