Chinese police have arrested a fugitive accused of evading justice for about 19 years by allegedly posing as his deceased twin brother. Multiple outlets report the man, identified by the surname Chen, was wanted in connection with a 2002 kidnapping and robbery in Yuhuan, in China’s eastern Zhejiang province. After six suspects were arrested early, Chen allegedly fled and remained at large for years.

According to reports, police later learned that Chen had been declared dead in 2007 after a road accident, and that his household registration was canceled. Investigators allege the wrong twin was killed in the crash and that Chen took advantage of their near-identical appearance to adopt his brother’s identity and continue living under a different name. A key development came in April 2026, when police received a tip and reopened the case.

Different coverage emphasizes how the deception was uncovered. Authorities reportedly examined name-change records and compared old identification photos, finding discrepancies. Police also interviewed the deceased twin’s former girlfriend, identified as surname Deng, who said the man who died in 2007 was the twin, not Chen. Chen was arrested on June 4, 2026, and the case has been referred to prosecutors.
