Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announces Sankoo as the region’s eighth district. The new district is formed by carving it out of Kargil and is intended to address long-standing local demands for better administration and easier access to public services. The announcement follows the creation of additional districts in Ladakh earlier this year.
Outlets report that Sankoo includes the tehsils of GM Pore, TSG, and Taisuru. Times of India also adds that five new tehsils are created to improve administrative efficiency and service delivery. The Hindu and NDTV note that Sankoo was not included among the five new districts announced earlier, despite requests from local organisations and political representatives.
Times of India highlights the role of local groups, including Anjuman-e-Sahib Zaman led by Syed Mohammad Razvi, in pushing for the district. Across reports, the decision is presented as part of an ongoing administrative restructuring in Ladakh under the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
