Pakistan is set to chair the IMF and World Bank Groups’ Boards of Governors in 2027, the first time since 1953, after being named the incoming chair during the 2026 WBG–IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema—also Pakistan’s governor to the World Bank—was formally announced during a plenary session, according to Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and multiple outlets.

Cheema is briefed on the chairmanship’s responsibilities by the World Bank Group’s Corporate Secretariat and meets senior World Bank officials as part of transition preparations. Outlets also report that he discusses priorities tied to amplifying the voice of developing countries and promoting effective and predictable development financing, as well as coordination across multilateral institutions. The Annual Meetings, scheduled for October 12–18, bring together more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries.

Some coverage emphasizes the “historic milestone” aspect and Pakistan’s expected role in facilitating dialogue among member countries. Other notes focus on Pakistan’s concurrent engagement with the IMF under a $7 billion Extended Fund Facility and a $1.4 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility, with a recent staff-level review enabling access to around $1.2 billion.
