Fairfax Financial Holdings is set to acquire a majority stake in IDBI Bank for Rs 52,878 crore, according to reports from multiple outlets. The deal is described as a substantial expansion of Fairfax’s footprint in India.
Moody’s assessment, as cited by NDTV and echoed by Economic Times coverage, says the transaction is likely to have only a limited impact on Fairfax’s leverage. The credit-rating view points to Fairfax’s liquidity reserve of about $2.3 billion and its funding strategy, which it expects to support the purchase without materially weakening the company’s balance sheet.
Across the reports, a common emphasis is that the investment aligns with Fairfax’s broader activity in India. The Financial Post notes that Fairfax already holds stakes in CSB Bank Ltd. and IIFL Capital Services Ltd., and the IDBI acquisition would add to these existing holdings.
