Nigerian politician Peter Obi is set to run for president in January 2027, according to reports from Bloomberg and the South China Morning Post. Both outlets say his candidacy is expected to further divide opposition forces against incumbent President Bola Tinubu, who is widely considered a candidate for a second term.
The South China Morning Post adds that Obi, who finished as runner-up in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election behind Tinubu, is ratified as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) party candidate. The outlet reports that the party confirms him late on Saturday and that he formally accepts the nomination in an address outlining his priorities. In that speech, Obi focuses on issues including insecurity and expanded health coverage, as well as increased investment in education—specifically mentioning schools, teachers, and technology.
Across the two accounts, the central point is that Obi’s decision to contest the next election makes it more likely the opposition remains fragmented rather than coalescing around a single alternative to Tinubu.
