The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rules on Mexico’s appeals against FIFA disciplinary measures tied to homophobic chanting by fans. According to reporting from multiple outlets, CAS dismisses Mexico’s attempts to overturn the financial penalties imposed by FIFA. Mexico is still required to pay separate fines of CHF 60,000 and CHF 80,000, which together total CHF 140,000. The two CAS outcomes are not identical, however. While the appeals concerning the fines are rejected, CAS partially upholds one aspect of Mexico’s challenge by annulling a stadium closure penalty. FIFA had imposed a 15% partial closure of Mexico’s stadium for its next A-level FIFA match as part of sanctions linked to the same incidents. That partial stadium closure is lifted by CAS. The underlying cases relate to supporter chanting using the homophobic term “puto” during three friendly matches played in the summer of 2024. Overall, the CAS decision maintains the monetary sanctions while reducing the impact on Mexico’s next relevant international game.
