Laura Marling surprise-releases a new children’s album titled “Laura Sings Raffi,” consisting of her cover versions of songs associated with Raffi’s work. Multiple outlets report that the record is delivered as an homage to Raffi’s style and ethos, and that not every track is necessarily an original Raffi composition. The album is released without prior notice and is made available for streaming. Consequence of Sound reports that Marling recently had a second child and includes a statement from the singer saying the project “marks a logical next step for me.” Stereogum also places the release within Marling’s broader history of covering other artists’ songs, noting that she has previously recorded and shared covers outside of conventional album cycles, including on her Substack. The outlets do not report additional details such as tracklisting length, release date beyond the surprise drop, or production credits, but they agree on the core points: the album’s title, its concept as Raffi covers for children, and its unexpected release.

Laura Marling has always been good at covers, and in recent years she's been indulging that talent a lot. The London singer-songwriter regularly records other people's tunes and shares them on her Substack. As the great music journalist Will Hermes recently pointed out, those covers are mostly behind a paywall, and they include songs by Adrianne Lenker, Neutral Milk Hotel, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, and Dolly Parton. It turns out Marling has also been spending a lot of time covering Raffi. The post Laura Marling Drops Surprise Raffi Covers Album appeared first on Stereogum.
