Aviva reports that it detects a record level of suspected fraudulent insurance claims in 2025, totalling £233 million across its brands. The insurer says it identifies more than 18,400 suspect claims, with the figure representing its highest fraud-flagged level to date. Aviva attributes part of the rise to scammers increasingly using artificial intelligence alongside other methods to support false claims.
According to the reports, some alleged fraud involves AI-generated images used to create or enhance fake evidence of car accidents, including fabricated or manipulated accident scenes. Aviva also says fraudsters use manipulated documents to back claims and, in some cases, exaggerate the extent of damage.
The Guardian notes that 2025 is the first year Aviva includes the Direct Line brands it acquired last summer, which may affect year-to-year comparability. The reports collectively describe a growing trend of claim attempts that rely on AI-supported fabrication and documentary manipulation, particularly within motor insurance.
