Research spanning roughly two decades finds that many coral reefs across Indonesia have so far shown notable heat tolerance despite ongoing ocean warming. Sources describe Indonesian reefs as exceptionally extensive and diverse, covering more than 32,000 square kilometers across the archipelago, and contributing to global coral biodiversity. While reefs in parts of Indonesia have remained relatively stable as waters warm, that stability is not unlimited. The studies emphasize that the reefs’ ability to withstand heat stress applies only up to certain temperature levels or periods of elevated heat. Beyond those thresholds, the impacts of warming become more pronounced, aligning with broader global patterns in which prolonged or more intense marine heat leads to stress and damage to coral ecosystems. Taken together, the reporting presents a picture of partial, time-bound resilience: Indonesian reefs can cope better than might be expected from climate trends alone, but they are still vulnerable to future warming and associated heat events.
