BYD is introducing its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology in India, describing it as an evolution of its work in the PHEV segment that began in 2008 with the F3DM. The company says it has sold more than 8 million plug-in hybrid vehicles worldwide and holds over 35% of the global PHEV market.

According to BYD, vehicles equipped with DM-i can run in an electric mode for driving, then use a petrol engine as backup when needed. The company claims a total range of more than 1,200 km, combining EV driving with petrol assistance. BYD also provides performance figures, saying DM-i-equipped cars can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 5.5 seconds.

On efficiency, BYD cites fuel consumption of 4.8 litres per 100 km under NEDC test conditions. The company further claims DM-i delivers lower noise and smoother operation, aiming for driving characteristics comparable to those of a battery-electric vehicle. The available details are based on BYD’s specifications and test claims.
