London Mayor Sadiq Khan says he opposes a planned “Great Israeli Real Estate Event” in London this Sunday and has discussed it with the Metropolitan Police, the Foreign Office and the Home Office. Speaking in the London Assembly during Mayor’s Question Time on Friday, Khan condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal under international law and said he opposes any attempt to sell property connected to those settlements in London or elsewhere. He said he is informed that any allegations of criminality relating to the potentially unlawful sale of property linked to the event would be assessed by the Met for possible investigation.

Khan’s comments follow reporting that the event is connected to companies advertising property in settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The event’s location is reported to be kept secret. Legal groups have asked the Met to consider whether the event should be blocked using a Serious Crime Prevention Order, describing potential offences related to the promotion or facilitation of property transactions involving settlement land, including whether financial flows could constitute criminal property.

Organisers have denied that the event will feature sale of land in occupied West Bank, saying exhibitors will provide information only about properties within the “Green Line.” The UK government has also said businesses should not conduct economic and financial activity in illegal Israeli settlements.
