Spain’s former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is facing a new investigation after police discover high-value jewellery during a search of his office. A court says the investigation concerns alleged tax fraud and smuggling following the finding of jewellery worth more than €1.3 million. The search is linked to a separate case, according to reporting.

Zapatero, who led Spain from 2004 to 2011 in two socialist governments, is described as already being investigated for other alleged wrongdoing. One existing inquiry focuses on claims of influence-peddling and related offences connected to the state bailout of the Spanish Plus Ultra airline during the Covid-19 period. Prosecutors have alleged a structured scheme designed to obtain economic benefits through intermediaries and the use of influence with public bodies on behalf of third parties, mainly Plus Ultra.

The new allegations center on whether the jewellery is connected to tax issues and smuggling. Sources do not indicate a court finding of guilt at this stage.
