Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo tells residents in Guyana’s Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) that the government is working to clear the housing backlog by the end of 2027. In public outreach in the region, he says about 3,000 residents are currently waiting for house lots and that officials are preparing steps to resolve the outstanding applications.

According to the reports, Jagdeo also outlines that the government plans to purchase private lands to support the allocation and development process. He says new housing schemes will be developed to meet housing demand in the region.

Both accounts indicate the government’s commitment covers applicants who submitted requests before December 2025, and even some who applied in 2026, with allocations targeted for completion by the end of 2027. The statements are presented as assurances to residents that the backlog will be addressed within the stated timeline, alongside land acquisition and housing development measures.
