FIFA says it will not impose sanctions on US broadcaster Fox after it breached FIFA’s advertising rules during the World Cup opening match between Mexico and South Africa. According to reports, the issue occurs during the first hydration break of the tournament. Fox is said to have resumed broadcasting live action about 10 seconds after play had restarted in the second half at Mexico City Stadium, rather than returning with the required lead time.
FIFA’s tournament regulations, provided to rights holders roughly two months earlier, allow broadcasters to carry commercials during hydration breaks. However, they require broadcasters to return to the match at least 30 seconds before play resumes. The reported delay indicates Fox’s broadcast did not comply with that timing requirement.
Despite the breach, FIFA indicates no penalty will be applied. The decision suggests FIFA treats the incident as a rules violation without resulting disciplinary action for the broadcaster in this case.
