Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi says Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup is due to a leadership failure rather than a lack of talent. In a statement posted on his official social media page, Obi argues that Nigerian talent exists but that political leadership has not created an enabling environment for young people to develop and maximise their abilities.

He points to the presence and participation of Nigerian entertainers and athletes with Nigerian roots at the tournament, presenting them as evidence of the country’s “untapped potential.” Obi also notes that some Nigerians compete internationally, using this as another example of talent finding opportunities outside Nigeria.

In the same statement, Obi commends music star Davido for drawing attention to insecurity during the tournament. He cites Davido’s reported appearance in a custom black leather jacket reading “BRING THEM HOME” and listing names of schoolchildren and teachers allegedly abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, saying the effort highlights the security crisis and the need for national and international attention.
