IPOB has criticised Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo for taking a position against calls for the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu. In statements carried by multiple outlets, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful says Soludo’s stance conflicts with earlier actions and is driven by political motives. The dispute follows comments attributed to Soludo’s media aide, who criticised Peter Obi’s renewed call for Kanu’s release and described Obi’s position as insulting to the judiciary.
IPOB also defends Obi’s position, saying Kanu’s continued detention is unjustifiable. IPOB points to Soludo’s previous visit to Kanu while he was in DSS custody in January 2023, when Soludo allegedly pledged to stand as surety. The group alleges that Soludo’s opposition now reflects changing political ambition.
Across the reports, Kanu’s case is described as a continuing flashpoint. IPOB and supporters portray him as a political prisoner, while the Federal Government argues that he must face justice for separatist-related activities in the South-East. One outlet adds that Kanu was convicted in November 2025 on terrorism-related charges and sentenced to life imprisonment, with his legal team appealing the ruling.
