Japanese authorities are investigating allegations that six major ice-cream companies collude to raise prices as summer temperatures approach. The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) carries out raids and searches of corporate headquarters, suspecting the firms violated Japan’s antimonopoly laws. According to multiple reports, the companies targeted are Akagi Nyugyo, Ezaki Glico, Lotte, Meiji, Morinaga Milk Industry, and Morinaga & Co.

The investigation centers on claims that the companies agree on suggested retail prices for their products, which could in turn influence broader pricing across the supply chain. One report notes that the actions attributed to the firms may also affect wholesale prices and increase costs for consumers, particularly at a time when demand for frozen foods typically rises.

Authorities have not reported findings or details of evidence beyond the suspicion of coordinated pricing. The companies named are therefore under investigation rather than confirmed to have violated antitrust rules, and the matter remains subject to the JFTC’s continuing inquiry.
