Gunmen attack the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, in the early hours of Monday, and three security operatives are killed, police and other reports say. The Vanguard report says attackers launched the assault unexpectedly and confirms three security operatives were killed. The Punch reports that a policeman and two other people were killed, with an additional report later stating police confirm three security operatives died. The Plateau State Police Command, according to Nigerian Eye, issues a statement confirming the deaths of three personnel on duty at the institute and describing the incident as regrettable. The police say security reinforcements are deployed around NIPSS and patrols are intensified following orders from the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah. Nigerian Eye also reports that the institute describes the event as a “security incident,” says there is no threat to participants, staff, residents or facilities, and states normal activities continue. The institute declines to provide further details and says it would be premature to speculate while investigations are ongoing. Police say the situation is under control and urge members of the public to remain calm.
