The Czech Football Association (FA) expels Czech Cup winners Karviná from the top division after finding the club involved in a major match-fixing scandal. The FA’s ethics committee also imposes a fine of 10 million Czech koruna (about $480,000) on Karviná for offering bribes to two referees and two players. According to the FA, the alleged payments were intended to influence a league match and two relegation playoff games involving the club in 2024.
The FA rules further include punishment for individuals tied to the alleged bribe offers. Karviná town mayor Jan Wolf is identified as the person who made the alleged bribe payments. He is banned from soccer for 12 years and fined 3 million Czech koruna (about $144,000).
The decision removes Karviná from the country’s top tier as a disciplinary measure, following the ethics committee’s determination that the match-fixing attempt violated association regulations.
