Serena Williams suffers a straight-sets defeat in the Berlin Open doubles on Tuesday, hours after it is confirmed that she will return to Wimbledon. Playing with her older sister Venus is confirmed for Wimbledon, but in Berlin Williams partners with Karolina Muchova. The pair lose to Giuliana Olmos and Erin Routliffe of Mexico and New Zealand, 6-4, 6-4. Williams and Muchova drop the first set after Williams is broken in her second service game. In the second set, they are again broken midway, and they do not recover. After the match, Williams says she feels physically better than in her previous outing, describing herself as “nimble,” “sturdy,” and quicker, and adding that grass requires quickness. This defeat comes shortly after Williams’ comeback announcement in June. She plays her second match since returning after a long break from tennis, having won her first match back at Queen’s Club last Monday before the tournament ended for her because doubles partner Victoria Mboko is injured. Williams clarifies she is focused on the comeback and does not confirm a singles return, stating she needs to get to work. She last won Wimbledon in 2016 and last won a Grand Slam singles title at the 2017 Australian Open.
