The U.S. Department of Defense says it used Elon Musk’s xAI “Grok Gov Model” to support military targeting during the U.S.-Israel war on Iran. In a sworn court declaration and related legal briefing submitted in federal litigation, Pentagon digital and artificial intelligence chief Cameron Stanley states that the Maven Smart Systems (MSS) platform enabled U.S. forces to deploy “over 2,000” munitions to “2,000 distinct targets” within 96 hours during Operation Epic Fury. The filings describe Grok’s government version as an xAI-derived model used to support functions including targeting, intelligence, readiness, and recruitment.

The disclosure comes as xAI faces a lawsuit in Mississippi brought by the NAACP. The group alleges xAI operates gas turbines powering its Colossus 2 data center without required permits or pollution controls under the Clean Air Act, arguing that emissions disproportionately affect Black communities. The U.S. Department of Justice urges the court to dismiss the NAACP suit on national security grounds, arguing that shutting down power for AI infrastructure could impair military operations. The filings do not specify the exact dates the AI was used during the Iran war. Separate reporting also notes that the Pentagon previously used other AI tools under its Project Maven effort before shifting to alternatives.
