France braces for another period of extreme heat as temperatures approach or exceed around 40°C in parts of the country. With heatwave “red alert” conditions reported for parts of France, authorities and residents focus on practical ways to reduce the impact of high temperatures across cities and transport systems. In Paris, the city authorizes swimming in a section of the Canal Saint-Martin, which becomes a designated cooling spot for people looking to escape the heat. Coverage also notes that this canal swimming access is part of a wider set of summer measures planned later in the season, including additional cooling opportunities at selected points along the Seine. Reports describe Parisians using the canal and nearby public cooling options such as fountains while local authorities apply safety measures linked to the heat emergency. In parallel, rail services are adjusted, with SNCF cutting some trains to help avoid problems related to air-conditioning during the hottest conditions. The measures are framed as temporary responses during a heat period that follows an unusually hot spell earlier in the year.
