Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay says the state will extend full support to HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding cluster planned at Thoothukudi. According to reports, the project is being positioned as a greenfield facility backed by a special entity and the port authority to facilitate implementation. The initiative is described as a multi-entity shipyard and ecosystem arrangement intended to expand local shipbuilding capacity and strengthen associated industries through ancillary manufacturing and the regional supply chain.

The project is presented as a large investment effort, with one report citing an outlay of about Rs 38,000 crore (linked to a stated $4 billion scale). HD Hyundai officials, including HD KSOE, are reported to be seeking an early start. Both sources also say the project is expected to generate around 15,000 jobs, with emphasis on creating direct employment. The discussions focus on expediting the rollout and coordinating the administrative and port-related facilitation needed to move the project forward.
