A 26-year-old woman from Ambernath near Mumbai, Vishakha Tilkar, dies by suicide 48 days after her wedding, according to reports. She married Nitin Tilkar on April 30. Her family alleges that the marriage quickly turned abusive, involving sustained physical and mental harassment and pressure to bring money and jewellery from her parents’ home, which they describe as dowry-related. They also allege that Nitin installed CCTV cameras inside and outside their residence to monitor Vishakha continuously, limiting her privacy and isolating her socially. The family further claims that confrontations occurred when she spoke to neighbours. Two days before her death, they allege she was beaten after she talked to a female neighbour. Vishakha’s family says she had informed her mother about the abuse, and they were reportedly preparing to bring her back home when they received news of her death. A case is registered with Ambernath police against Nitin Tilkar, his mother Chhaya Tilkar, and brother Ninad Tilkar. Police book the accused for mental and physical harassment and for abetment to suicide; Nitin is reported to be arrested, while efforts continue to locate the other two.
