India observes the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on Sunday, June 21, with the national theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” In New Delhi, a mass yoga session at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is planned with Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya and actor Akshay Kumar joining thousands of participants. The Sports Ministry is coordinating yoga sessions across Sports Authority of India regional and training centres, National Centres of Excellence, and Khelo India institutions, alongside events run by national federations, state sports departments, sports universities and other bodies. Organisers expect participation from more than 15,000 people nationwide.

In Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi leads the main IDY event at Red Road, where a Common Yoga Protocol is planned with thousands of yoga enthusiasts. Preparations include changes to Kolkata Metro services starting early on June 21, and additional activities such as mass yoga demonstrations involving 500 boats on the Hooghly River, with efforts described as a Guinness World Record attempt. Ahead of IDY, large pre-event gatherings in Mumbai at the Gateway of India included programmes led by AYUSH officials and yoga practitioners focusing on youth wellness. Reports also highlight expert commentary linking yoga to preventive health and healthy ageing, including research interest in the theme.
