Waymo is recalling about 3,800–3,900 of its robotaxis in the United States after identifying a software problem that could cause the vehicles to enter freeway construction areas that are closed and then continue driving at speed. Multiple outlets report that the recall follows incidents in which robotaxis passed ramp-closure signs and entered highway sections under construction. TechCrunch and other sources say Waymo found at least 13 instances where vehicles drove into parts of the freeway that should have been closed. Bloomberg and Engadget describe the recall as being linked to software behavior rather than a hardware issue, and Free Malaysia Today and CBS News cite the risk of entering closed zones. Quartz reports the recall is the second for Waymo in a little over a month, following an earlier recall related to flooded roads. The company pulls the vehicles from highway operations while it addresses the issue, according to several reports. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is mentioned as being involved in the recall related to the identified software risk.
