The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to reduce the circulation of illicit small arms and light weapons in Nigeria through the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW). The NCCSALW, which operates under the Office of the National Security Adviser, is increasing cooperation with security agencies and other stakeholders to tackle trafficking, unlawful possession, and misuse of illegal weapons. NCCSALW Director-General Johnson Kokumo undertakes additional engagement activities, including a three-day working visit to Maiduguri in Borno State as part of efforts to reinforce partnerships and advance strategies in the North-East.
During stakeholder interactions, NCCSALW officials emphasize that stronger inter-institution cooperation helps reduce the circulation of illicit weapons and supports national security. The Centre says it works closely with security agencies to recover illegal arms for destruction and that it has been empowered to prosecute individuals involved in the trade. Sources also note that NCCSALW was established by a 2024 Act of the National Assembly, and that the North-East zonal centre, based in Maiduguri, covers multiple states. The engagements include meetings with state government representatives, military officials, and agencies such as DSS, NDLEA, Immigration, Customs, and Civil Defence Corps.
